Tarmac Resurfacing

Tarmac resurfacing is just one of many services that we offer at RM Kennedy & Sons. There are many reasons why you would want to resurface a driveway or a road. This process is commonly referred to as tarmac overlaying and it does exactly what it says on the tin.

We are tarmac specialists. At RM Kennedy & Sons we can install a new layer of tarmac directly over the top of an existing layer. This process should always be completed by a trained professional who using the correct materials. At RM Kennedy & Sons we will talk you through the whole process and complete the tarmac surfacing project from the very start to the end. Firstly, our team will clean the existing driveway, getting rid of any loose material that may be lying on it or around it.

The process is extremely intricate which means that we will repair any edging courses that are damaged or loose. Once any minor damage on the existing surface is repaired we can then begin to cut any required joints to reduce heights or increase clearance.
The next step is to target any areas that are prone to water collection. The surface will then be covered evenly with Bitumen Emulsion (AKA tack coat) which bonds the new layer to the old one

Certain factors should be taken into account if you are considering tarmac resurfacing, for example, is your driveway prone to flooding? Is it damaged beyond repair? If these are questions that you are asking yourself, please get in touch. These are factors which you should consider resurfacing, however, there will be a service which we provide that will improve the appearance of your surface.

As surfacing contractors, we have been working with tarmac in Glasgow for a number of years and offer a variety of surfaces to suit every requirement. From durable heavy duty Tarmac and to asphalt laying, our tarmac surfacing contractors have the equipment and skill that will leave any surface smooth.

What is Tarmac

“Macadam” is known to be the process of binding together smaller aggregates. This technique was invented by a pioneer called John MacAdam in the 19th century. Although this is the first recorded discovery or the Macadam, technique, some say that the Chinese have been using a form of Macadam as far back as 3000BC. John Macadam was involved heavily in the development of tar-based macadams.

Tarmacadam is a bituminous material which can be used paving. Tarmacadam is often shorted to “Tarmac”, however, it is also referred to as Asphalt. The substance is comprised of tar and broken stone. A professional tarmac laying company will then mix and shape the substance, laying it and brushing it evenly. The mixture is then set with tarmac laying machinery such as a steam roller.

What is Asphalt?

We are asphalt contractors. Statistics have shown that 90% of all paved roads are paved with asphalt. Asphalt provides road users, from trucks to pedestrians, a consistent, safe and durable surface for their journeys, whether local or across the entire continent.

Similar to Tarmac, Asphalt is a mixture of aggregates, binder, and filler. It is commonly used for constructing and maintaining all kind of roads, parking areas, play areas and sports areas. There are a number of aggregates which can be used for asphalt mixtures, including; rock, sand, gravel or slags.

Once the materials have been mixed into an cohesive mixture, a binder is used. Most asphalt paving companies use bitumen is used as a binder. Bitumen is a product of the oil-refining and petrochemical industries. It is used due to its thickness as it is extremely successful when used for binding. Most commonly, an asphalt pavement consists of the road structure above the formation level which includes unbound and bituminous-bound materials.

Road surfacing contracts refer to asphalt as a flexible pavement. This is due to its ability to largely resist the stress imposed by slight settlements of the subgrade without cracking.

The Benefits of Laying Tarmac

If you are considering laying tarmac on your premises, then this could be extremely beneficial for you. There may be many different surfaces and techniques that you can use to improve the appearance and functionality of your driveway, road or car park, however, once tarmac is applied, it is extremely low maintenance.

There are a number of reasons why Tarmacking is a very popular surfacing method with the domestic, industrial and commercial market. This type of material appeals to both consumers and surfacing companies alike due to its simple application process and excellent durability. At RM Kennedy & Sons we couldn’t recommend tarmac laying anymore. Here are just a couple of reasons why tarmac could benefit you.

Laying Tarmac: Easy Installation

The Tarmac process is truly remarkable. This substance is laid as a hot liquid. After it has been applied to the surface it should be given time to cool. Once the tarmac cools it sets. In most cases, it can be laid directly onto an existing surface, something which other surfacing materials cannot do. We also provide tarmac driveways in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Durable Tamac in Glasgow

Save costs on maintaining soft landscaping with tarmac. Once tarmac is installed it is really easy to maintain – with rare repairs needing to be taken on. The process can be completed in just one day and once tarmac has cooled down and the particles have bound together it becomes an incredibly strong and resilient surface. Tarmac is popular as it can hold the weight of heavy vehicles easily, which makes it an excellent choice for those who want to refurbish their driveway.
